Institute for Early Christian and Byzantine Studies

Then and now

The Institute for Early Christian and Byzantine Studies was founded in the late 1970's and today unites some ten permanent and temporary staff members. As an interfaculty institute hosted by the Faculty of Arts of the Catholic University of Leuven (Belgium), its activities are both educational and scholarly:

  • by offering university courses on different aspects of Byzantine literature and art;
  • by supervising theses on both master (MA) and doctoral level;
  • by promoting popular interest in the Byzantine world and culture (lectures);
  • by promoting the study of eastern Christianity (Fonds Albert en Mathilda Van Roey);
  • especially by the study and the edition of (originally) Greek texts of the Byzantine period and by hosting and editing the Series Graeca of the Corpus Christianorum (Fonds Gerhard Vossius [Carl Laga]).
